Gregory Armstrong, born August 28, 1943 in Schenectady, New York, died December 10, 2016, at his home in Van Buren, Arkansas. Survivors include wife Silvia, son, Edward and daughter-in law Amy (and their children, William, Daniel, Sylvie and Hannah), daughter, Gianella and son-in-law John (and her sons, Gustav and Mason), daughter, Erica and son-in-law Michael (and their daughter, Lola), daughter, Maralie and son-in-law Eli, and brother, Andre and sister-in-law Connie (and their children, Crystal, Aaron, and Cara). He grew up in Wayne County, Indiana, an area homesteaded by his ancestors in 1814. Following his 1961 graduation from Centerville High School in Indiana, he earned a bachelor's degree from Butler University in Indianapolis, Indiana, and later served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Montevideo, Uruguay. On December 12, 1968, he was united in marriage with his eternal companion, Silvia Rial Castillo of Montevideo, Uruguay, with whom he had and raised four children. He earned advanced degrees at Ball State University and Indiana State University. Armstrong taught in the Union County and Centerville-Abington schools, as well as at Indiana University (IU East and Bloomington). From the late 70's through 1995 he and his wife directed Indiana University's summers Honors Program in Mexico, later teaching at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, State University of New York (Cortland), Pulaski Tech in North Little Rock, and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith. He had the distinction of being recognized as a Fulbright Scholar. He was devoted to his family and his faith in the Lord. He served as bishop of the Richmond, Ind. and North Little Rock, Ark. wards of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In Arkansas, funeral services will be held on Saturday, December 17th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (located at 8712 Horan Drive, Fort Smith) Viewing from 10-11 a.m. and Funeral Service at 11:30 a.m. Services are under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home. In Indiana, graveside services will be held at Doddridge Chapel, 9470 Chapel Road, Centerville. Memorial contributions may be made to the Doddridge Chapel Cemetery Association, P.O.
