Evelyn Ruth Pope was born Oct. 3, 1920 in Springfield, Ark., daughter of Charles Franklin and Mary Satterfield Edwards. She was born in the middle of a very large family. Growing up she was a peacemaker. At seventeen she went into the big city, Little Rock from the country community of Solgohachia to help her family during the Great Depression. Evelyn magnanimously sent funds home and even livestock that she purchased during these hard times to support her needy family. Evelyn always had a heart for God and was no stranger to church, especially since her grandfather was a circuit-riding preacher. But something was missing. There was a loneliness in her heart that was finally satisfied when after hearing the radio preaching of Charles G. Fuller on the Old Time Gospel Hour, she fell to her knees in repentance, putting her sole faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. She often said, "I was so changed, I went to the mirror to see if it was me!" As she grew in grace she met a young Texas preacher and they married. Evelyn and Julian partnered in ministry throughout their lives, passing their faith down to their children who are serving the same Lord they were taught to love. Evelyn Ruth Pope was promoted to her heavenly home on Dec. 12, 2016. Evelyn is preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Julian Pope. She is survived by her sister, Glenna, daughter Judy, sons David and Johnny, many grandchildren, great grandchildren, other family members and friends. Public viewing: 5-8 p.m. Monday, Dec. 19. Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 20 at Christchurch Baptist Fellowship, Houston, Texas. Interment: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 21 at Liberty Cemetery, Hawkins, Texas.
