Roy Raymond Grote

Rev. Roy Raymond Grote, 97 1/2, of Bella Vista, passed away on December 25, 2016 in Springdale. He was born on June 27, 1919 in Muldoon, Texas to the late William and Hattie (Ehler) Grote. He was the husband of the late Pauline (Galloway) Grote. He was baptized in Black Jack Springs, Texas and confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church, Robstown, Texas. He attended college at Texas Lutheran College and Wartburg College. He graduated with a Doctorate from Wartburg Seminary, in Dubuque, Iowa. He was ordained as a Lutheran Pastor on June 14, 1942. Roy served in parishes in Greenvine, Roscoe, Sinton, and Littlefield, Texas; Show Low, Arizona; and Michigan and La Moure, North Dakota. He was a member of the Bella Vista Lutheran Church where he served pecan pie (baked by his son, Raymond) whenever he led the men's Bible Study. He had huge gardens and loved sharing his produce. Roy enjoyed rock hunting, collecting Indian relics, digging bottles, and swimming. Roy wrote his autobiography at age 96. He will be missed for his storytelling, generosity, and sense of humor. Roy was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Pauline; sister, Erna and brother, Walter. He is survived by his children, Wynona Engle and husband Rev. Laird Engle of El Campo, Texas; Dr. Raymond Grote and wife Mary of Joplin, Missouri; Florine Haug and husband Willie of Odem, Texas and Dorinda Glennon and husband Dr. William Hogan of Mulege, BCS, Mexico; 8 grandchildren, Velleta Scott, Kathy, Allan, and Sarah Grote, Kevin Haug, Laura van Poppel, and John and Benita Engle; 25 great-grandchildren; and the family caregiver, Sandy Scoville. A memorial service will be on Friday, December 30, 2016 at the Bella Vista Lutheran Church at 10 a.m. Memorials can be given to the Circle of Life Hospice, 901 Jones Rd., Springdale, Arkansas 72762 or the Food Pantry of Bella Vista Lutheran Church, 1990 Forest Hills Blvd., Bella Vista, Arkansas 72715.
