Willie Harris

On May 7, 1931, in Lester, Arkansas German and Josephine Stanfield Harris welcomed their second son Willie Davis Harris, into their family of four children. Willie Davis attended the Camden Public Schools where he graduated in 1948. He received a football scholarship to attend Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Arkansas where he received a B.S. Degree in Chemistry and Biology in 1953. Later, he received a M.S. Degree in Biology from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, and a M.S. Degree in Chemistry from Tuskegee Institute Tuskegee, Alabama, a M.S. Degree in Biology from Ouachita Baptist University, Arkadelphia, Arkansas, and his Ph.D. Degree in Chemistry and Administration from Commerce University, Commerce, Texas. W.D. began his teaching career in 1954- in the Smackover School District, Smackover, Arkansas where he met and married Catherine Coleman Harris, and from this union three children were born: Dennis Bernard, Davis LaMar, and D'Monde Denise. Dr. W.D. Harris taught Chemistry, Physics, and Biology for 40 years in the following Arkansas School Districts: Smackover, El Dorado, Mt. Holly, Camden, and Little Rock. Dr. Harris is preceded in death by his parents, German and Josephine Harris, and his second wife, Florene Harris. He is survived by his three children, Dennis Bernard, David LaMar (Patricia) of Houston, Texas, and De'Monde Denise Shannon of Tampa, Fla.; four grandchildren Dannin Curtis, Dave Raquel, Kristopher John, Shannon, and Dennis Bernard Jr. and Mary Lee Hill of Camden, Ark. Funeral services will be Saturday February 20, 2016, 11 a.m. at St. James AME Church, Camden, Ark. The body will lie in state at the funeral home Friday, July 19, 2016 from 12 until 5 p.m. Services entrusted to Premier Funeral Home 1518 S. Battery St. Little Rock, Ark. 72202.
