Anthony Meryl Grasse

Anthony Meryl Grasse, M.D., passed away peacefully in Chambersburg, Penn. on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016 at the age of 92. Born May 16, 1923 in Chalfont, Pa. to the late Anthony Myers Grasse and Lillian (Landis) Grasse. Dr. Grasse was an accomplished physician in family practice, surgery, obstetrics & gynecology, dedicated to healthcare service. He lived in Calico Rock, Ark., from 1952 to 2015 and retired from being a physician at the age of 88. Dr. Grasse graduated from Souderton High School in Bucks County, Pa. in 1940 and Goshen College, Goshen, Ind. in 1943. He earned a degree from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1947 and completed a surgery residency at York Hospital, York, Pa. He served in overseas medical work in Ethiopia, East Africa and Indonesia 1948-1951, and Nigeria, West Africa 1964-1966 with the Mennonite Church. Dr. Grasse established a medical practice in Calico Rock, Ark. in 1952 and built a hospital the Medical Center of Calico Rock in 1959, which was renamed the Community Medical Center of Izard County. He was active in the Mennonite Church in Arkansas, and was a founding member of Calico Rock Mennonite Fellowship. Dr. Grasse was the husband of Gladys (Landis) Grasse, a nurse, for 63 years. In addition to his wife, he is survived by six children, Karen Grasse of Philadelphia, Pa.; Joel Grasse & wife Susan of Rogers, Ark.; Mark Grasse of Dallas, Texas; Chloe Grasse & husband Linford Martin of Greencastle, Pa.; Carol Grasse of Boulder, Colo.; Gwendolyn Grasse & husband Steve Voran of Boulder, Colo.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two brothers, Willard Grasse & wife Gladys of Chalfont, Pa.; Warren Grasse & wife Linda of Telford, Pa.; two brothers were previously deceased, John Grasse (deceased 2005) is survived by his wife Mary Margaret of Calico Rock, Ark., and Alvin Grasse (deceased 2015) is survived by his wife Ruth of Lacombe, Alberta, Canada. A worship celebration of life service is planned for Saturday, Feb. 27, 2016 at the United Methodist Church in Calico Rock, Ark. (1611 AR-Highway 56). 12-2 p.m.: Visitation; 2 p.m.: Service.
