John Powell Woods Jr.

John Powell Woods Jr., 94, longtime resident of Siloam Springs, Ark. passed during the early morning hours on Thursday, February 18, 2016 at the Siloam Springs Nursing & Rehab Center. Mr. Powell Woods was born January 19, 1922 in Ft. Smith, Ark.; he was preceded in death by his father and mother; John Powell Woods Sr. and Mable Fairfax Hon Woods and two brothers, Gaines William Woods Sr. & (retired Colonel) Pendleton Woods. Powell was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he served 25 1/2 months in the Northern Solomons in the Asiatic- Pacific Theater of Operations in WWII. Mr. Woods married Lola Lavoy Keener on June 18, 1954 in Little Rock, Ark.. He graduated law from the University of Arkansas and practiced law under his father's law office (Dailey & Woods) in Ft. Smith before moving to Siloam Springs in the latter part of the year in 1958. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, boating, spelunking, collecting guns and knives, liked reading and writing in his journal; and after retirement he was a member of the local square dancing association. He was an Eagle Scout Master and a member of the Siloam Springs VFW Post 1674, lifetime member of the American Legion, Siloam Springs Rotary Club where he had more than 14 years of perfect attendance, a member of the University of Arkansas Alumni, NRA, North American Knife Club and the Arkansas Bar Association #50053. He has also been recognized in appreciation of volunteer effort on behalf of low income clients as a member of the Ozark Legal Services Pro Bono Panel. Upon his death Powell donated his body to the University of Arkansas Medical Science and Research. Powell is survived by son, John Powell Woods III, Broken Arrow, Okla.; daughter, Lola LaVoy Dobson, Colcord, Okla.; grandchildren, Chance Dwight Woods & Anasophia LeaVoy Dobson; brother, Daniel Hon Woods, Little Rock, Ark.; first cousin, Dr. Warren Murray, Fayetteville, Ark. Powell is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and many friends and loved ones. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lola in 2003. A memorial service is scheduled for Thursday, March 3, 2016 at 2 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church on 325 East Twin Springs st. Siloam Springs, Ark. Pastor Randy Rowlan will officiate the service. Arrangements were made under the direction of Backstrom – Pyeatte Funeral Home of Siloam Springs, Ark.
