VELMA MARIE BRANTLY, 84, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 27, 2016 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, following a brief illness. She was born to G.H. and Elizabeth Hughes Brantly on Oct. 17, 1930, in Lake Providence, La. Velma graduated from Lake Hamilton High School in Pearcy, Ark. and completed a business degree from Draughn's Business College in Little Rock. She worked for many years as a comptometer operator at Tuf Nut, Light House for the Blind, and finally for the State of Arkansas. She is still admired by her family for her work ethic. Velma never drove a car but rode the bus to and from work for over 30 years. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Little Rock where she sang in the choir and then joined the Second Baptist Church. She loved the Lord and when she was no longer able to attend church, she enjoyed watching services on television. Velma was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, James Brantly of California. She is survived by two sisters, Claire Brantly Burch of Little Rock and Ruth Brantly Smith of Cape Girardeau, Mo.; a sister-in-law, Donna Brantly of California; five nieces, one nephew, nine great-nieces and nephews and one great-great-nephew. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 3, at 9 a.m. with funeral services at 10 a.m. at Griffin Leggett Healey & Roth in Little Rock. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Hot Springs.
