Eldred F. Pauling

Eldred F. Pauling, age 83, of Bentonville, Arkansas passed away on Sunday July 24 in his home. He was born June 5, 1933, the son of Henry and Edna Klien Pauling in Paullina, Iowa. The family later moved to Minnesota, where he was raised and attended school. He was confirmed at the Evangelical Lutheran Church on May 22, 1949. He later moved back to Iowa to help an uncle with the intent to farm and raise cattle there. On June 12, 1955, he was united in marriage to Hilda Hattermann at Zion Lutheran Church in Paullina, Iowa. They moved to Cherokee, Iowa where he worked for Rock Island Lumber Company. He was later transferred to Montevideo, Minnesota as the manager of the lumber company there. He was a United States Army Veteran, having served in the Korean conflict. Years later, he purchased a lumber company, Cleghorn Lumber, in Cleghorn, Iowa. He also started his own company called Pauling Building Supply in Sutherland, Iowa. Eldred and his wife Hilda operated both businesses till 1979 when they moved their family to Bentonville, Arkansas. Having purchased a ranch earlier near Pea Ridge, Arkansas, he enjoyed his retirement raising cattle and the chores associated with that. Eldred enjoyed the annual family trips to Florida, Mexico and South Texas as well as hunting duck, deer and fishing with his son, Kerry. He had a great talent for building and repairing almost anything, much to the benefit of his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Edna Pauling, two brothers Alvin and Lyle Pauling, a brother-in-law Lloyd Reints and two sisters-in-law, Sue Pauling and Bonnie Pauling. Eldred is survived by his wife, Hilda (Hattermann) Pauling; son, Kerry Pauling and his wife Debbie Pauling of Bentonville; daughter, Tamara (Pauling) Burger and her husband Kent Burger also of Bentonville; five grandchildren, Hunter Pauling, and Kristen, Garrett, Ashetyn and Jackson Burger; brother, Lawrence Pauling and his wife Phyllis Pauling of Waterloo, Iowa; brother, Merlin Pauling also of Waterloo, Iowa; sister Milda Reints of Worthington, Minnesota; and sister-in-law Berniece Pauling of Lakefield, Minnesota. He was a very special PaPa in the lives of his grandchildren. He was also PaPa to extended family Mason, Micah and Maddie Burger, Jacob and John Nance and James Schnoes. Eldred loved his family and was deeply loved and appreciated by them. Celebration of Life services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, July 28, 2016 at Christ the King Lutheran Church, 406 W. Central Avenue, Bentonville, Arkansas with Pastor Dawn Donato and Chaplain Jim Moore officiating. Graveside service with full military honors will follow in the Bentonville City Cemetery.
