Vivian Louis Tolerson Scott

Vivian Louis Tolerson Scott, 95, of Fordyce, Ark., departed this life June 23, 2016, surrounded by family. She was born March 3, 1921 to the late Ethel Hurshpield Tolerson and Jessie E. Tolerson Sr. in Auvergne, Ark. She was preceded in death by four sisters: Vernell T. Proffitt, Gloria T. Haskins, Doris T. Borders, Delores T. Blackwell and two brothers, Clay Tolerson Sr. and Jessie E. Tolerson Jr. She is survived by one sister, Floy T. Nelson (Robert), Newport, Ark. Vivian married the late Reverend Herbert M. Scott Sr. on Dec. 25, 1949. Two children were born from this union: Herbert M. Scott Jr. (Yana), Little Rock, Ark., and Marquis Daryl Scott (Joyce), Pine Bluff, Ark. She has two grandchildren, Yana-Janell Scott, Little Rock, Ark., and Ulysses S. Grant IV, Houston, Texas, and two great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Ife Grant and Austin Elijah Grant. Vivian attended W. F. Branch Colored Junior High School, Newport, Ark., and received her high school diploma from Cotton Plant Academy, Cotton Plant, Ark. In 1944, she earned her B.S. Degree in Home Economics from Philander Smith College, Little Rock, Ark., and further studied Library Science/Media at A.M.&N., Pine Bluff, Ark., Atlanta University, Atlanta, Ga., and Our Lady of the Lake College, San Antonio, Texas. In 1983, after serving the Fordyce School District for 36 years, Vivian retired. She taught third grade and civics at Dallas County Training School and was a librarian for Fordyce Middle and J. E. Wallace School. She continued to serve an additional 15 years in the district as a substitute teacher after retirement. She was also a faithful servant at Mt. Olive United Methodist Church; a member of the Elegant Ladies Club; Delta Sigma Theta Sorority; and the Fordyce Scholarship Association where she served eight years as President. She was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church, 104 East Fourth Street, Fordyce, Ark. Visitation will be Tuesday, June 28, 2016, 4:30–6:30 p.m. The funeral will be Wednesday, June 29, 2016 at 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to Fordyce Scholarship Association in Vivian T.
