Thomas Eugene ("Gene") Calvert, 83, of Little Rock, was promoted from this world to serve King Jesus face to face on June 25, 2016. He is survived by his precious wife of 62 years, Rosetta Mowrey Calvert. He leaves behind his children, Robert and Nancy Calvert of Little Rock, Jamie Calvert of Little Rock, Cynthia and Ron Trosclair of Rockwall, Texas, nine grandchildren (Christine, Taylor, Abigail, Hayes, Jahan, Robert, Corbin, Zachary and Bayley), five great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family. Born October 17, 1932 in Widener, Arkansas, he was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Thomas Robert Calvert, Katie Chism Calvert, Audrey Griffis and Ruth Shawn Coffey. Gene was a strong man of faith who placed God, family and country above all. He was a member of Crystal Hill Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years. In addition, Gene taught a Seniors Sunday School class at Geyer Springs Baptist Church. Gene served in the Army during the Korean War. Gene was an avid sportsman. Before his knees gave out, he loved to play baseball and fast pitch softball. He later coached boys how to play baseball. He hunted deer and squirrel over five decades. He was also a founding member of both the Ouachita Hunting Club and Arkansas Squirrel Club. Gene was a world traveler visiting his beloved grandchildren who live in Mexico, Costa Rica, and Kenya. No amount of distance would keep him from seeing his "grand ones." Gene lived a simple life, being a faithful husband, a loyal father and an adored Peepaw. He will be deeply missed by many. Gene's "homegoing" celebration will be held at 10 am on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at Crystal Hill Baptist Church. Rev. Larry Ballard will be officiating, followed by a burial, with military honors at Crystal Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be offered from 6-8 p.m. on Friday, July 1st at Griffin Leggett Forest Hills Funeral Home, 10200 Highway 5 North, Alexander, Ark. 72002 (501) 455-1067. Memorials may be made to Crystal Hill Baptist Church, Youth & Children's Fund, 18823 Crystal Valley Rd., Little Rock, Ark. 72210 or IMB – SBC, P.O. Box 6767, Richmond, Va. 23230.
