Dr Jonathan & Edyce Shermer

Mrs. J.P. (Edyce) Shermer passed away on March 15, 2016. Edyce was born in Little Rock Jan. 1, 1924 to Myrtle Booker Taylor and Edgar Taylor. She attended Henderson College and worked as a stenographer in the U.S. Engineers' office during WWII. She married Dr. Jonathan P. Shermer on Sept. 21, 1944. He passed away on March 17, 2016. He was born in Horatio May 23, 1923 to Hazel and Dayton Shermer. He was a United States Marine Captain in WWII, a pilot who flew a Corsair in the South Pacific. He attended Hendrix College, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and Emory University in Atlanta. He later joined the Army and spent two years at Fort Chaffee as a medical officer before starting his medical practice in Fort Smith. His achievements throughout his life were numerous: soap box derby winner, Eagle Scout, Golden Gloves boxer, aviator in WWII, physician for over five decades, cattleman, longest serving member on the Fort Smith planning commission, successful business man and much, much more. Mrs. Shermer supported him every step of the way. Dr. and Mrs. Shermer were loving parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents who will be deeply missed by their family. They were known as "Bigdad" and "Gran-mom" to their loved ones. Their 71 year marriage was a true love story. He died of a broken heart two days after her passing. Dr. & Mrs. Shermer were preceded in death by her twin sister, Anne Blakely, and his brother, Dayton Edward Shermer. They are survived by their son, Jon P. Shermer Jr., Clarksville, daughter, Susan Horton and husband Tommy, Birmingham, Ala., three grandaughters, Dr. Susanna E. Shermer and partner Mechan Vanderpool, Little Rock, Ashley Ivatt, Greenville, S.C., Angela Horton, Birmingham, Ala., two great-granddaughters, London Ivatt and Jada Jackson, great-grandson, Hudson Vanderpool, two nieces, two nephews, and their families. They were members of First United Methodist Church. Private graveside services will be at the National Cemetery.
