David Matthews Jr., of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away Saturday, May 14, 2016. David was 67 years old. He was a member of the Professional Golf Association and held Director of Golf and Head Golf Professional positions for over 38 years. In 2007, David was awarded in the PGA President's Council on Growing the Game. His career started out in the Georgia PGA Section at the Atlanta Country Club as an assistant to Davis Love Jr. He was also a member of the Metropolitan PGA Section where he won the 1976 Long Island Open. David played golf at the University of Arkansas in the late 1960s. David is the son of the late Martha and Wilson Matthews, former Associate Athletic Director of the University of Arkansas. David was the oldest of three sons and is survived by Bruce Matthews and the late Scott Matthews of Fayetteville. He is also survived by his wife, Anna, of 27 years; a step-daughter, Tafta Turner of Dallas, Texas; a son, Matthew and wife Kathryn; and two granddaughters, Mallory and Callan of Orlando, Fla. Memorial services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, June 2, at Sisco Funeral Chapel in Springdale with Hal Henson officiating. Graveside service and burial will follow at 4 p.m. at Oakland Cemetery north of Atkins with Rev. David Bishop officiating under the direction of Lemley Funeral Service of Atkins.
