Janice "Gale" Burks, 80, of Benton went to be with her Lord on Friday, Sept. 2, 2016, at Saline Memorial Hospice House in Bryant. Gale was born in Chicago, Ill., to Ormand Kermit King and Claire Krauss King and grew up and received her education in Reno, Nev. She retired in 2005 after 21 years of service as executive assistant to the Chief of Police in Benton. In her retirement, she enjoyed reading, crosswords, jigsaw puzzles and fun evenings with her Bunko group. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Connie Snyder; and a son, Charles Patrick Burks. Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 52 years, Charles Burks; son, Dennis John Burks (Nancy) of Jonesboro, son, David Kermit Burks (Scarlett) of Little Rock, and daughter Robin Burks Garrett (James) of Benton; eight grandchildren Hope, Luke (Jennifer) and Rebecca Burks; Matt and Ryan Garrett; Noah, Jackson and Lilly Burks; and a sister Jennifer Rijos of Calif. Pallbearers are her grandchildren. Honorary pallbearers include her long-time friend Judy Pridgen and her Bunko group of Sharon Andrews, Beverly Vinyard, Cheryl Huddleston and Claudia Smith. Visitation is Tuesday, Sept. 6, 6-8 p.m. at Sharon Baptist Church in Benton. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 7, at Rosemont Cemetery in Benton. The family requests memorials be made to Saline Memorial Health Foundation Hospice House or the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org.)
