Doris Ruth (Young) Hendricks, age 92, of Springdale, passed away Saturday April 8, 2017, in Springdale. She was born on September 29, 1924 in Corsicana, Texas, the daughter of Alfred Cecil Young and Anna Mae (Inman) Young. She lived her early life in Texas graduating from high school in Dallas where she met her husband-to-be, Tom Hendricks, when she was seventeen and they were married ten days before her 18th birthday. Their partnership continued for over 74 years until his death on February 3, 2017. During the war, Doris moved with Tom wherever his naval assignment took him and after the war, they returned to Texas. In 1955, the family moved to Fort Smith, Ark. and Doris continued her chosen role of homemaker and mother. She also belonged to several civic clubs and volunteered in many areas. In 1965, they moved to Fayetteville and Doris joined Tom in the retail business. She later owned and managed a clothing store in Evelyn Hills. She was a member and past president of the Junior Civic League of Fayetteville and continued her volunteering in many charitable areas. Some of her favorite activities included golfing with the "girls" and going to dances with Tom where they would be the first on the floor and the last to leave. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Fayetteville from 1965 to her death. Other than her husband she was preceded in death by an infant son, Thomas Hendricks, Jr and one daughter, Cindy Schmidt. She is survived by a daughter, Cece Hilliard and husband Jerry of Fayetteville; one son-in-law, Andrew Schmidt of Bella Vista; four grandchildren, Rob Harrison and wife Beth, Kyle Harrison and partner Fernando; Chad Gabbard and wife Tiffany, and Cher Masters and husband Chris; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A visitation will be held from 10 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017, at Moore's Chapel in Fayetteville. A graveside service will be held from 11 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. on Friday, April 14, 2017, at Fayetteville National Cemetery at 700 S. Government Ave., Fayetteville, Arkansas.
