Winston Dale Mize

Winston Dale Mize, age 85, of Benton passed away early on Tuesday, April 11, 2017. He was born July 13, 1931 to Olin and Mary Ruth Mize of Bauxite, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Peggy Mize, who was the love of his life and his best friend. He is also survived by his daughters, Brenda Mize of Little Rock, Robin Fuhrman (Bryant) of Little Rock, Paula Dahm (Mike) of Pittsburgh, PA; and grandchildren, Brian Dahm (Julia) and Beth Ballard (Ben), all from Pittsburgh, Pa. He was preceded in death by his sister, Mary Beth Davis, of Benton. As a high school athlete with the Bauxite Miners, Dale was known as "Moose Mize." He enjoyed football and held several state records in track and field. Dale was later inducted in the Bauxite Hall of Fame and then continued to serve on the Hall of Fame Committee. After serving in the Army for two years, Dale had a long career with Alcoa. As a mechanical engineer, he held many managerial positions, which included assignments in Bauxite, Ark., Mobile, Ala., Kingston, Jamaica, and San Luis, Brazil. Dale was a committed long-term member of First United Methodist Church of Benton and a member of the Covenant Sunday School Class. Dale enjoyed many things in life but his greatest joy was his time with his wife Peggy. Together they enjoyed family, church, dogs, golf, Razorback sports, and travel. Their last travel was a road trip to complete their goal of travel through all 50 states. Later in life, Dale was known by his golfing buddies as "The Big Guy." This nickname not only described his height, but truly described his heart. He was compassionate not only to his family and friends, but felt responsibility to reach out within his church and community. The example he set as a husband, a father, a grandfather, friend, and member of the community will influence many lives forever. Visitation will be held on Friday, April 14th from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. at Ashby's Funeral Home in Benton. A memorial service will be held at First United Methodist Church in Benton at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 15th. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 200 N Market Street, Benton, Ark. 72015. Online guest book at www.ashbyfuneralhome.com.
