Augustus Bruen Wood II, age 75, of Hot Springs, Ark. went to be with Jesus on Feb. 23, 2017. He was preceeded in death by his grandmothers, Allie Wood and Alma Couey and his parents Augustus Bruen Wood and Sarah Lucille Couey Wood, all of Fountain Hill, AR. He is survived by his wife of 17 years, Joyce Wood of Hot Springs, Ark. and three children, Chip (wife Julie) of Durant, Okla., Cathi Swan (husband Darren) of Woodlawn, Ark., and Amy Smallwood Grizzle of Hot Springs, Ark. Also surviving are Mitchell (wife Lynn) Wood of Sherwood, Ark. and 10 grandchildren: Shelbie Wood of Durant, Okla., Easton Mullinax of Woodlawn, Ark., Bruen Wood of Durant, OK, Brit Swan of Woodlawn, AR, Taylor Smallwood of Pencil Bluff, AR, Jerrod McKinney of Hot Springs, Ark., Jacob Lilly of Hot Springs, Ark., Hunter Sawyer of Little Rock, Ark., Emma Sawyer of Durant, Okla., and Jack Sawyer of Durant, OK, and close cousins, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Coach A.B. Wood was born in Monticello, Ark. on Feb. 15, 1942, raised in Fountain Hill, Ark. and graduated with the class of 1960. He attended college at the University of Arkansas at Monticello and Henderson State University where he earned a B.S.E and M.S.E in history. He was a member of the UAM Alumni and the Phi Lambda Chi Fraternity. He coached Arkansas high school football teams in Smackover, Lake Village, Earle, Dumas, Mountain Pine, and Springhill. Coach was an avid sports enthusiast, enjoyed working in the yard, and spent a great deal of time with his children and grandchildren. He was a devoted husband, daddy, and papaw. A.B. was a member of Hot Springs Baptist Church where he served on the security team, mowing team, and was the choir's biggest fan. His celebration of life will begin with visitation on Monday, Feb.27th from 6 p.m.-8 p.m. at Gross Funeral Home in Hot Springs, Ark. His memorial services will be held on Tuesday, February 28 at 10 a.m. at Hot Springs Baptist Church followed by a graveside service at 4 p.m. on the same day at Flat Creek Cemetary in Fountain Hill, Ark. The services will be officiated by the pastor and staff of Hot Springs Baptist Church. Memorial service pallbearers are Rodger Fendley, Louis Fendley, Tommy Singleton, John Watson, and Neil Lillard. Graveside service pallbearers are Hoyle Wood, Steve Wood, Quint Couey, Brad Gee, Mike Morris, and Bryce Wesson. Honorary pallbearers are Don Hartley, William Cater, Bill Hester, Rev. Gerald Taylor, Phi Lambda Chi Brothers, and all former football players. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Hot Springs Baptist Church, 144 Weston Rd, Hot Springs National Park, Ark 71913.
