Robert "Red" Howard

Robert "Red" Howard, 94, passed away on Tuesday, January 10, 2017 in Rogers, Arkansas. He was born in 1922 in Sturgis, Mississippi to Harvey and Ada Ruth (Rainey) Howard. After graduating from Mississippi State College in 1943 with a degree in civil engineering, he joined the U.S. Navy. Upon completion of Midshipmen's School at the University of Notre Dame he served in a Seabees construction battalion in the Pacific Theater. After his WWII service, Red met and married the love of his life, Katy, in 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA where they both worked for the Dravo Corporation. He was employed as a professional engineer for nearly 40 years working on large-scale construction projects across the US. His expertise was the building of bridges, locks and dams, and large tunnels. He was a member of several professional engineering organizations including the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Beavers, and the Moles. Red retired in 1986 and moved with his wife to Rogers. He had a great love and appreciation for the outdoors and wild places, and throughout his life spent his free time tramping through the woods, paddling his canoe, feeding the birds, and seeking out the best fishing holes. He was a great angler and enjoyed fishing on Beaver Lake, both in solitude and with his friends, for the last 30 years of his life. Red is survived by his wife of 67 years, Katherine "Katy" Weisser Howard; their three daughters, Susan Haran and husband Terry of Boulder, Colo., Judith Rodriguez and husband Jaime of Austin, Texasa, and Amy Klee and husband Greg of Nahant, Mass.; six grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five great-grandsons; brother, Bill Howard of Sturgis, Miss.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Red was predeceased by his parents and brother, Leon Howard, of Sturgis, Miss. A visitation will be held on Friday, January 13, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Benton County Funeral Home, 306 N 4th St., Rogers, Ark. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Parkinson Foundation or charity of your choice. A memorial service will be planned at a later date.
