Weldon Sledge

Weldon Sledge, age 90, of Warren, Ark, died Thursday, January 26, in a car accident. He was born March 1, 1926, in Morrilton, Ark to the late Henry and Eva Long Sledge. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Violet Vint Sledge, whom he was married to for 62 years; siblings Luther Sledge, Olen Sledge, Alvin Sledge, Jake Sledge, and Marie Brown. He is survived by three children, Phyllis Gaithright (Kenny), of Benton, Ark, Jane Jelks (Bobby), of Shreveport, La., and Jimmy Sledge (Gwen), of Warren, Ark; five grandchildren Greg Ezell (Janice), Michelle Vocque (Clint), Chad Sledge (Emily), Kirt Sledge (Kerri), and Peyton Sledge; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Polly Bridgeman of Conway, Ark. Weldon was a World War II, Navy Veteran. After returning from the war, Weldon received training as a broadcast engineer. He was the engineer that put KVOM in Morrilton on the air. He and Vi moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma and purchased their first radio station. They sold it, and then moved to Warren to purchase KWRF AM in 1959. They put KWRF FM on the air in 1976 and retired in 1991. He also served on the Warren School Board for 13 years, was a former Pink Tomato Festival Chairman and a founding member of the Warren Tomato Market Board. Weldon enjoyed hunting and fishing at Camp 13, mowing and attending Sunday School and Church at Calvary Baptist Church. Funeral service will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, January 28, at Frazer's Chapel. Burial is in Oakland Cemetery by Frazer's Funeral Home. Visitation is from 12 (noon) until service time Saturday, January 28, at Frazer's.
