William Harvey Ison, age 91, of Benton, passed away on July 3, 2017; also known as (Sonny and Bill). He was born June 23, 1926 in Gravel Ridge, Ark. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Ida Snow and William Hamilton; brother, Faye (Bud) Eugene and brother-in-law, Bill Westenhaven. He is survived by his wife of 26 years, W. J. Ison of Benton; sister, Norma Ruth (Sue) Westenhaven of Sherwood; step-children, Kevin Malone (Rhonda) and Kim Reynolds (Keith) of Benton; grandchildren, Chris Ison, Ariel Baltz (Chris), Ben Malone (Tiffany), Jory Malone (Abby), Chrissy Reynolds and Haley Reynolds and great-grandchildren, Chandler, Jace, Jackson and a fourth expected in September. He enjoyed numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends & extended family. Bill graduated from Central High School in 1944 and immediately joined the Navy as a morse code operator. He was quickly shipped overseas where he saw action at Guam, Saipan, Philippines, Luzon and Leyte. Bill was third class radioman and continued his education at Arkansas Tech in Russellville, Arkansas after his deployment. After his graduation, he started his career at Southwestern Bell and remained a valuable employee until his retirement. During that time, SWB, sent him as far as Nassau to install communications for the space program. He was also responsible for the installation of the West Memphis Dog Track. Bill enjoyed spending his retired time Rv'ing with his wife and spending time with his children and grandchildren. He loved fishing and golfing with his friends. Bill has touched many people in his life with his kindness and giving nature. He loved taking old treasures apart and restoring them. For 2 years, he enjoyed car racing at the Hope Airport on weekends. Bill was always ready with a story or a little tune. His story telling will be missed by many for years to come. Visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Saturday, July 8 at Ashby Funeral Home with services beginning at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Forest Hills Cemetery. Bro. Cecil Hyde will be officiating.
