Ruth Cherry Moffatt

Arline Ruth Cherry Moffatt, 99, of Monticello departed this life Wednesday, October 31, at BelleView Estates Nursing and Rehab. Born in Monticello on April 2, 1918, she was the daughter of Arline Ruth and Robert Everyn Cherry. Ruth attended Monticello schools graduating from Monticello High School in 1935. She received her elementary education degree from Arkansas A&M College (now UAM) in 1939. Briefly teaching in Hamburg, Ark. and Bay City, Mich., Ruth spent most of her 10-year career in Monticello where she was a beloved third-grade teacher. On November 25, 1950 she married her childhood neighbor, Wells Moffatt, and began her life as a homemaker and volunteer. She touched many lives as a Sunday school teacher and Brownie/Girl Scout leader, and as one of the earliest members of Monticello Junior Auxiliary. She lived her life giving to others and her family. Ruth's artistic talents were evident in her volunteer activities. She enjoyed needlework, crafting many items for new babies and family members. Her love of nature and plants was poured into the large lot surrounding her home where she and Wells enjoyed bird-watching. Baking, especially with her two granddaughters, was another favorite pastime. She was a life-long member of Wood Avenue Presbyterian Church and a life-member of Junior Auxiliary and the Drew County Historical Society. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 60 years, her sister, Robinette Dorris, and niece, Cherry Dorris. She is survived by her daughter, Marsha Ruth Moffatt Daniels and husband Bill, granddaughter, Natalie Ruth Daniels Atkins and husband Justin all of Monticello, granddaughter, Meredith Daniels of Omaha, Nebraska, two nephews, Robert and David Dorris of Memphis, Tennessee and several great-nephews and nieces. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, November 4, one-hour prior to the funeral service at 11 a.m., both to be held at Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at Oakland Cemetery in Monticello. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to the UAM Foundation Fund (Moffatt Forestry scholarship), P.O. Box 3520, Monticello, Ark. 71656 or to the Drew County Historical Society, 404 S, Main St., Monticello, Ark. 71655.
