Bernice Toland

Bernice Toland, 99, of Sherwood, stepped into heaven on November 15, 2017. She was born October 6, 1918 to Bill and Eunice Tullos in Ashley County, the oldest of nine children. After the flood of 1927, the family moved to higher ground in Hamburg. She graduated from Fountain Hill High School and later completed a business degree at State Teachers College in Conway. During WWII, she worked at the Jacksonville Ordnance Plant. She married Sam Toland on August 2, 1944. They were married for 32 years. After becoming a stay-at-home mom in 1945, she later became a substitute teacher in the North Little Rock School District. She spent many years as a bookkeeper for the Vestal family in the floral business, eventually retiring for the accounting department of the Little Rock School District. She joined Baring Cross Church in 1954. She taught Sunday School and served faithfully in various ministries. She especially loved working with the ladies in the Senior Ladies Class and traveling with the XYZ. She is preceded in death by her husband, three sisters and four brothers. She is survived by her son, Tommy Toland (Carol) of North Little Rock; two grandchildren, Ginger Toland Holcomb (Clifford) and Bryan Toland (Jennifer) of Sherwood; two great grandchildren, John Holcomb of Sherwood and Kay Holcomb Comer (Joshua) of Berryville and one great-great granddaughter, Kaylyn Comer of Berryville; a brother, Willie Tullos of Anchorage, Alaska and a host of other relatives and friends. We would like to express our gratitude to the staff of Sherwood Nursing and Rehab for their loving care of our Mother over the last two years. Visitation will be Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 1:00PM at Baring Cross Baptist Church, followed by a celebration of Bernice's life at 2:00PM. Burial will immediately follow at Arkansas Memorial Gardens, Hwy 161 in North Little Rock. Memorials may be made to Consecrate the Land at Baring Cross Baptist Church, 7541 Warden Rd, Sherwood, AR 72120. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Owens Funeral Home.
