Mrs. Delores Anita Mays Broughton was the only girl born to Mrs. Edna Motley Mays and Talmadge Guthrie Mays. She enjoyed life to the fullest amid four brothers who loved her dearly. She passed from labor to refreshment, Saturday, September 23, 2017 at the Trinity Village Medical Center. She was born December 13, 1932 in Pine Bluff, Arkansas, the only daughter of Talmade Guthrie Mays and Mrs. Edna Motley Mays. She was preceded in by her parents and four brothers, Ralph Gene, Robert Earl, Talmadge Jr., and Dr. James Arthur Mays Sr. She received her early education in the Pine Bluff Public Schools graduating fro Merrill High School in 1948. She received the B.A. degree from A..M.&N. College, now the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff in 1952. She was also awarded the M.S. degree in Library Science from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana,Illinois, in 1966. She completed further study at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and Ouachita Baptist University. She was part of seven generations of membership at the St. John A.M.E. Church. At the age of 13, she was a delegate to the A.M.E. National Convention as a member of the A.C.E. League. She was a member of the Senior and Vesper Choirs, the Lay organization, Missionary Society, Women's Day, Ebony Drive Chairperson and served in numerous capacities at the church. Mrs. Broughton served 46 years in the teaching process as follows: She began her teaching career at Calhoun County Training School in Thornton, Arkansas; Wonder High School in West Memphis, Arkansas, and Lincoln High School in Camden, Arkansas. She began her first year in Pine Bluff as Social Studies/Librarian at the newly built Southeast High School in 1958, where she played a major role in helping to gain accreditation for the school in its first year. In 1976, she transferred to Belair Jr. High School until 1986 when reorganization of schools sent her to Jack Robey Jr. High School to establish a new library for 8th and 9th grade students. In 1993, she was assigned to Pine Bluff High School as Media Center Director. She remained there until her retirement in 1998. She was particularly proud of her 17 years of continuous service at Southeast Jr.-Sr. High School, a school that she loved dearly. She never stopped giving of her best to our community. For many years, she worked diligently with a number of organizations assisting in the public service that all good teachers perform daily in their various classrooms. She held memberships in the: Arkansas Education Association (AEA); National Education Association (NEA); Pine Bluff Education Association (PBEA) President in 1980 Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated Phi Delta Kappa professional organization for educators National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP); Arkansas Association of Library Media Specialist; Jefferson County Retired Teachers Association; Order of the Eastern Star-Harmony #40. She was married to Theodis Broughton and to this union a son, Stephen Andre' Broughton was born. She often claimed that all the children that atttended Southeast Jr.-Sr. High School were her children as well and encouraged all her students to "Be Great". Survivors include a son, Dr. Stephen A. Broughton (Dr. Cheryl), one brother, Dr. Edward Mays, of Pine Bluff, two grandchildren, Dr. CaLynna D. Sorrells and Dr. Stephen T. Broughton II, her special neighbors, Scotty, Marcie, and Taylor Johnson, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 30, 2017 at St. John A.M.E. Church with Reverend Cecil Williams Jr. officiating. Interment will be in the Cedar Grove section of Graceland Cemetery at Pine Bluff by the P.K Miller Mortuary. Mrs. Broughton will lie in repose at the church from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Visitation was held from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. The Omega Omega Services was held at 6 p.m. The family will be at 2002 West 42nd. Street, Pine Bluff, Arkansas 71603.
