Martha "Mot" White Hemphill passed away peacefully on January 22, 2018 at 85 years of age. She was born January 19, 1933. In 1954, Mot graduated from the University of Arkansas where she was president of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. In the same year, she married Joe Horace Hemphill who passed away in 1994.Mot started teaching P.E./Health at West Memphis High School in 1955. She then got her Masters Degree from Memphis State University, and was a guidance counselor at WMHS for the next 40 years, retiring in 1994. Mot was very involved in her church, First United Methodist Church West Memphis where she played the organ for over 50 years. One of her favorite memories was playing the organ for the youth ministry's program, "Friends and Coworkers Inc." A lover of dogs, she was a big supporter of the West Memphis humane society. She proudly taught half of West Memphis how to swim, and was the biggest Razorback fan in the state. In 2012, Mayor Billy Johnson of West Memphis proclaimed October 7 as "Martha Hemphill Day" due to her many contributions to the community. Mot was preceded in death by her parents E.J. and Lena White. She is survived by her daughter Lee Ann Hemphill Brosh and her husband Shane Brosh, and her two grandchildren, Charlee Ann Brosh and Meredith Bailee Hamilton (Joseph). Mot will also be missed by a host of family friends. First United Methodist Church West Memphis will host both Mot's visitation on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the funeral service on Thursday, January 25 at 2 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to First United Methodist Church, West Memphis Humane Society, and Steudlein Learning Center.
