Alyce Smith, age 86, a resident of North Little Rock, Arkansas died on Friday June 6, 2018 at Hospice Home Care in Little Rock, Arkansas surrounded by her husband and children. Alyce Joy Caroline Smith was born March 8, 1932 in Moorhead, Minnesota, the only child of Frank and Selma (Peterson) Mitchell. She was a member of Cormorant Lutheran Church of Lake Park, Minnesota and attended Our Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas in the winter months. She graduated from Moorhead High School in 1949 and from North Dakota University in 1953, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority. She was a talented educator teaching in several high schools; including, Lidgerwood, North Dakota, Fergus Falls, Minnesota, Iowa City, Iowa, Fargo, North Dakota and Wichita, Kansas. On June 15, 1955 she married the love of her life, Vernon Smith. They had two children, Sabina Amen from Portage, Indiana and Steve Smith from Iowa City, Iowa. In 1964, they moved from Appleton, Wisconsin to Fargo, North Dakota to raise their children. In 1984, they moved to Wichita, Kansas where they continued their careers. Upon retirement they moved their home to Pelican Lake in Otter Tail County, Minnesota on land originally purchased by her parents in 1945. Alyce spent the summer of 1945 and every other summer on the Lake for the rest of her life. During retirement, she and Vernon spent the first six winters in Phoenix, Arizona and the subsequent winters in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Alyce was devoted to her family and friends (including the dogs and cats) and was a compassionate, caring person who was eager to help others. She loved music, sang in church choirs and was able to thrive when life brought change. Alyce is survived by her husband of 62 years, Vernon; daughter, Sabina Amen and husband Mark; son, Steve Smith and wife, Carol; grandchildren, Garion Amen and wife Jordan of Florence, Alabama, Cooper Smith and Hayley Smith both of Iowa City, Iowa. Memorials may be made to Cormorant Lutheran Church in Lake Park, Minnesota or Our Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas. Memorial service will be Monday, June 11, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Our Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran Church in North Little Rock, Arkansas.
