Food: Dong Lee, who used to run Hanaroo downtown (it has since passed into other hands), took his excellent Hanaroo sushi menu with him to his new place in a former Quizno's on Cantrell Road, including a fine Volcano Roll, spicy tuna and "crispy tempura," and the slightlyembarrassing- to-order Mexican Orgasm Roll, eel, sliced avocado and lots of hot sauce. He also offers a hibachi menu, the pinnacle of which is the King of Flames, light-on-the-oil and cooked-just-right filet mignon, lobster tail and calamari with fried rice and side grilled vegetables, plus familiar dishes like Salmon Teriyaki, Unagidon (freshwater eel on a bed of sushi rice) and Don Katsu (fried pork cutlet).
Mood: There are no eight-seat hibachi tables and there is no sushi bar - everything is prepared at stations in the semi-open kitchen, which Lee has kept more or less in the same design as it was for the Quizno's. Diners sit at handsome black hand-painted and cherry hand-stained chairs or in booths with thin padding over the hardwood seats, and a waitress or food runner delivers everything.
Moolah: Sushi prices are comparable to or even a little lower than area competition (rolls run $3.95-$11.95); hibachi prices are cheaper by about $5, what it costs for the food minus the usual grill-top show. And there's no extra charge for fried rice. - Eric E. Harrison
