Fatsam's calls itself the "originators of zydeco-style cuisine." The bold, festive, Mardi-Gras-invoking colors and the zydeco music certainly set the mood.
One of the best things about Fatsam's is that the Cajun/Creole cuisine is flavorful to the max ... but not so spicy that sufferers of heartburn and and related disorders can't enjoy it.
Dinners are served with hot-water cornbread, red beans and rice, and coleslaw or potato salad.
One of Fatsam's best dishes is the Jerk Chicken ($6.50 as a po boy, $7.50 as a dinner), a Caribbean dish whose very name that brings fear into those who can't take spicy food. It has a strong-but-gentle flavor that stays with the diner ... in a good way.
