While Forbidden City is showing its age, it does still have its appeal.
It's the kind of place that is welcoming and accessible (as it's located right by the entrance of the ground floor parking lot) - not only to more swank shoppers but to anyone wearing workout clothes and hospital scrubs.
Also, it's the only place in the commercial confines serving alcohol (frothy cocktails in addition to beer and basic wine).
Forbidden City offers a comprehensive menu of poultry, pork, beef, seafood, vegetable, chef specialty, "diet," rice, noodle and curry dishes to accommodate different tastes and budgets ($6.50 for Vegetable Fried Rice up to $20.95 for a whole Peking Duck; most are less than $10). Starters include soup ($1.50) and fried or meaty appetizers ($1.25-$9.95). A better deal might be the $2.25 Complete Dinner upgrade that includes soup plus chicken wings and an egg roll.
Nearly 40 lunch specials ($4.95-$6.50), served with an egg roll, rice and soup, are available until 4 p.m. daily.
Dine-in service is efficient. And carryout orders are not only ready but carefully wrapped - with foam liners in between dishes to prevent spills - when customers arrive.
