Rediscovering

Several weeks ago, I ran across a picture of my husband, Griffin, and me taken at Washington’s Dulles International Airport in 1979 before we boarded a flight to London for a six-week honeymoon in Europe. I was wearing a little Clovis Ruffin sweater dress, pantyhose and sling-back pumps. Griffin had on a suit and tie. Time was when travel — foreign or domestic — was a much-anticipated event for which you wore your Sunday best.

What’s it like to be the architectural project manager on a $50 million renovation of 15 galleries at one of the most important art museums in the world when you do not speak the same language as most of the craftsmen doing the work?

THE TRAVEL DESK: Age-old query:When will leaves turn?

Lower temperatures almost make us forget the hot summer we experienced this year. And it’s the lower temperatures and shorter days that “remind” the leaves when it’s time to change colors.

Corks, not baseballs, to fly at heart benefit

Time was when the best wine served at Dickey-Stephens Park was whatever was recommended that night by former Arkansas Travelers manager Bill Valentine at his stadium restaurant. (Unfortunately, Valentine’s closed in 2009.) On Oct. 6, the concourses will be filled with hundreds of oenophiles, and the sound of corks popping — rather than bats cracking — will fill the air.

Scott Alan Shirey

When Scott Shirey arrived in Helena in January 2002, he knew time mattered. He was there to open the first KIPP charter school in Arkansas, and he had just six months in which to do it. Six months to hire teachers, enroll pupils, renovate a building and start his own new life in the Mississippi Delta.

‘Vintage Affair’ chairmen expect no beef at benefit

Flash back to 1984. The catchphrase was “Where’s the beef” from a Wendy’s television commercial. Though the Wendy’s TV ads lasted only a year, the phrase became a way of questioning the substance of a story or an idea.

Displays of valor

Seaman First Class Fred E. Jacobs, a 20-year-old sailor on the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, wrote a letter to his parents on Feb. 20, 1945. The next day, while patrolling off Iwo Jima and a neighboring island, the Saratoga was attacked by nearly two dozen Japanese aircraft, including a number of kamikazes. Several of the suicide planes crashed into the carrier, igniting a firestorm.
