Some years ago, a headline on this very column hailed Lu Hardin as an “almost faultless Democrat.” Presumably, he hadn’t yet discovered the high-dollar slot machines of Tunica, Miss., which at the time was still mostly rural Delta scrub trying to establish itself as a gaming destination.

I’m no expert, but I imagine all states have their historical dark sides. One of Arkansas’ involved the War Relocation Authority, created by President Franklin D. Roosevelt in March 1942.

Think for a minute: Does the name Sylvander Dewberry Martin mean anything to you? I’m not really expecting it to ring any bells. It’s just that of all the names in my genealogical logbook, his is my favorite. It’s distinctive, you know? Or rather, it would be if we could ever decide just exactly what the name was.

Let me add my amen to the editorial comments about two bills before the Legislature. First comes House Bill 1018, which passed the House recently by a vote of 86-4. It’s aimed at preventing public employees from drawing state salaries and state retirement benefits at the same time.
