Arvest spurns U.S. debit-fee trend

Arvest Bank, the largest bank in Arkansas, will not follow the lead of the nation’s largest banks and charge a monthly fee for debit-card purchases, the Bentonville bank announced Monday. The announcement comes after Bank of America decided Thursday to charge debitcard users $5 a month to use its card, beginning in January. Sun Trust and Regions Financial are also charging debit-card fees, while Wells Fargo and Chase are testing debit-card fees, which are not charged if a customer uses the card only for ATM withdrawals.

Model tracks polluted runoff

The U.S. Geological Survey is offering software to allow states to track and control fertilizer and waste runoff that finds its way to the Mississippi River, then to the Gulf of Mexico, where it causes a “dead zone.” The dead zone is estimated to be 6,765 square miles, or the size of Connecticut, according to the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium. Farmers in northeast Arkansas are some of the largest contributors of fertilizer runoff in the Mississippi River Valley.
