Dogs and cats may not always be the best of friends, but having both in your home or on your farm can successfully keep mice and other "pest rodents" away, a University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences researcher says in an article at ScienceDaily.com.

I read your column about cats and hair mats. I brush my dog's hair every couple of days to keep it from matting, so my question isn't about that. I'm curious about my dog's behavior when I brush him. The thing is that he yawns a lot. He also does what I call "fidgeting." He stands most of the time, but during some brushing sessions he'll go up and down -- sit down, stand up, sit down and so on. What do the yawning and fidgeting mean?

My mom and dad have a sweet dog that they got from a shelter. Kelly is a mixed breed. He gets along well with everyone, but he ducks his head and kind of moves away when we try to pet him on the head. My parents were told to just keep trying and he'd get used to it. I'm not so sure. Why does Kelly shy away from having his head touched? Is there anything that can be done or should we let it go?

Many of the questions I receive from readers are related to litter box problems, with the majority concerning cats that begin to inexplicably go in places other than the box. When I hear from them, the owners of these cats are usually at their wits' end trying to understand what's happening and how to deal with it.

My house cat is approximately 10 years old. She has recently stopped urinating in her litter box and has chosen a rug at our back door. I bought a new litter box, which she used for a few days but has reverted back to the rug. What can I do to get her back to using her box?

This might be a weird question, but I want to know if my dog needs more calories in cold weather than he does in warm weather. Even though we haven't had much cold weather, I know it's coming. My dog (Sam) is male, 6 years old and weighs about 45 pounds. Sam is mostly an indoor dog, but I take him for walks and sometimes to play at the dog park.

When we're out walking, my dog sniffs everything along the way. Sometimes he'll smell something, then rub his head on the ground where he was sniffing. Once he even flopped down and rolled in something really stinky. I couldn't tell what it was, but I had to give him a bath when we got home. Why did he do that?
