PRACTICALLY ACTIVE: How blood glucose monitor models measure up

posted: 07/28/2014 2:06 a.m. Discuss

As mentioned at the end of my last column, I'm writing more about blood glucose meters this week, and will finish up in my next column. There is so much information that I can't get it into just two columns.

Cozy up to Andres breakfast

Before a trip to Andres Coffee Shop, I went online to see its menu. The “About us” section says that Andres is owned and operated by Edgar Gonzales and his family who live in the Little Rock area. The shop was created as a way to celebrate the life of Edgar’s grandfather, Andres, who grew up in Honduras and was a coffee farmer, and that sparked Andres’ love for the beverage.

Practically Active: Evaluate strategies to better glucose monitoring

posted: 07/14/2014 2:15 a.m. Discuss

I firmly believe that one of the main things that makes people with diabetes give up the struggle toward better health is having to monitor blood glucose regularly. It often feels like a thankless task, one of those chores everybody always tries to get out of.

In late 2012 I wrote about problems I was having with my right foot, which turned out to be a broken fifth metatarsal. In February 2013 I had surgery, but after three months of waiting, the bone had not healed properly.

PRACTICALLY ACTIVE: Be vigilant about diabetes risks for amputation

posted: 06/02/2014 2:11 a.m. Discuss

In my last column I mentioned a woman with diabetes complications that led to the amputation of her arms and legs. It's a frightening turn of events that could happen to any of us with diabetes.

Practically Active: Wake-up call: Diabetes complications preventable

Where have these first 4 1/2 months gone? I feel a day late and a dollar short sometimes, and I'm still struggling with getting that "act" I've written about together.

SPECIAL EVENTS REVIEW : Four Disney heroines star in 'breathtaking' ice show

posted: 05/08/2014 5:11 a.m. Discuss

Verizon Arena in North Little Rock was abuzz and aflutter Wednesday night as a gaggle of little gals in princess costumes turned out for the opening-night performance of Disney on Ice Rockin' Ever After. Of course along with them came a herd of moms, dads and grandparents, most of whom seemed to enjoy the show as much as the kids.

Cancun still fine in new spot

My family has been familiar with Cancun Mexican Restaurant for years. The Jacksonville establishment has managed to stay in business through two moves, and in spite of our less-than-perfect economy.

PRACTICALLY ACTIVE: Positive attitude aids recovery after disaster

After the Boston Marathon bombing, the words used to describe the recovery of the city were “Boston strong.” After the devastating tornado that ripped through parts of this state April 27, I’m thinking many of us are embracing the concept of “Arkansas strong.” It’s been so heartening to see the outpouring of money and physical help for people who were left with nothing but a few photos and scraps from their lives.
