DEAR TOM AND RAY: I’m sending this anonymously because I don’t want my friends to know what a bonehead I am. I went out to the driveway to replace the rear brake shoes on my daughter’s ’98 Honda Civic EX. I positioned my floor jack under the rear cross member, but did not jack it up. I then went into the garage to get my jack stands, and placed them beside the car.

DEAR TOM AND RAY: My “check engine” light came on a few weeks after an oil change. I then took my 2008 Subaru Impreza to the dealer, and they pulled a shop rag out of my car (it was blocking two-thirds of the air intake). Upon request, the oil changing place agreed to pay for the dealer’s services (I am still awaiting reimbursement ). Several weeks later, my air/fuel sensor and my mass air sensor failed prematurely.

DEAR TOM AND RAY: I have the misfortune of needing to drive a beat-up 1995 Volvo 850, which I share with my husband, who fancies himself an expert on cars. Out of the blue, the blinkers (the right and left signals) quit working. Once in a while, the signals work, but most of the time they don’t. My husband stubbornly refuses to believe that they don’t work. He claims that they are working just fine for him, ergo I must be doing something to keep them from working! Is it unusual for signals to work intermittently? — Terry

DEAR TOM AND RAY: My 53-year-old husband drove like an old man in his 1997 Camry, but then he gave the car to one of our kids. He bought a six-speed 2004 Acura TSX, and his driving habits changed drastically. He drives too fast in it, no longer stops for right turns on red or at stop signs, and takes all turns like a race-car driver. I’ve complained plenty, but to no avail!

DEAR TOM AND RAY: When I was younger, I had a friend who had an early- ’80s Pontiac Firebird. It was in rough shape, and it had the 305 small-block engine with a four-barrel carburetor. It never seemed to run smoothly, and it could have used a tuneup.

DEAR TOM AND RAY: I heard a caller on your radio show a few weeks ago ask whether passengers are obligated to pay for speeding tickets, and this prompted an old discussion between my friends and me about a similar situation we had several years ago. Two friends and I went on a road trip throughout the West Coast for six weeks in my brand-new car.

DEAR TOM AND RAY: My husband was driving our Yukon on the highway (cruise control set on 70) when he passed out. He was in the left-hand lane of four lanes, so I reached over and turned off the ignition and steered to the left shoulder, and then to the grassy median (I never realized how far a car can travel without the motor on!). I finally drove into a large road sign that dipped down and then back up, causing the car to finally stop.

DEAR TOM AND RAY: I had the “opportunity” to watch my car fall off a flatbed tow truck last night in the middle of Brooklyn. Nothing like waiting two hours for a tow truck because the car wouldn’t start, and then seeing it sitting in the middle of a busy intersection while the tow-truck driver keeps repeating

DEAR TOM AND RAY: I have a 1993 Subaru Loyale 4-wheel drive wagon. The transmission-fluid dipstick has broken off the cap. The stem is down the fill tube beyond where I can reach it with a telescoping magnet. I tried to grasp it with a long pair of hemostats, but was unable to get far enough down to grasp it.

DEAR TOM AND RAY: I was told today at an auto-body-repair shop that the temperature dial on my car (the one that is half-blue and half-red ) is not a thermostat for the air conditioner, and that I should never touch it when the air conditioner is on. I was told that it does work as a temperature control if you are venting in air from outside or running the heater, but not for the AC.
