Fry, an American magazine editor, made his mark in history when he went in the summer of 1940 to Marseille, France, on the clandestine mission to help more than 2,000 anti-Nazi and Jewish refugees, including artists Marc Chagall and Max Ernst, flee from the clutches of the new Nazi regime.
