The license a cop needs is the badge. Wearing a gun in the open for the whole world to see would take away some of the power, note not authority, of these people. The gun and the badge means I can do pretty much what I want to because I have a gun and a badge, as long as someone does not have a cell phone that is. What is it about power, power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. A gun in the open lets everyone know where it is and what you intend to do with it, reaching in your jacket and pulling out a concealed weapon catches everyone off guard, reaching down for the holster to pull the gun and everyone is well aware there is trouble brewing, albeit by a few seconds, but they still know. Not necessarily along the lines of this article, but I am also in favor of out lawing air conditioning in squad cars, so these people will have to roll the windows down occasionally and hear what is going on around them, maybe the crime rate would fall, because they would get off their backsides in the air conditioning.
