If these colleges and universities are providing motivation and encouragement for students who might not otherwise achieve an education, then they are definitely needed. Education is the key to rising out of poverty, and unfortunately there are far more African-American families in poverty than there are White families. Understanding the importance of education is an evolution - if your parents are highly educated they expect the same of you. If your parents are not as educated and don't understand the value of education, you will not be encouraged to achieve the education. Until all races equally understand and seek the value of education, there will continue to be a large gap in the income levels between races.
