Exxon Mobil complaint
Two subsidiaries of Exxon Mobil have agreed to pay almost $5 million in government penalties and to take corrective and precautionary actions as a result of an oil spill in Mayflower in 2013, the Justice Department said. The penalties and other requirements are part of a proposed consent decree set to be filed in U.S. District Court in Little Rock on Wednesday, April 22.

Exxon Mobil’s petition to appeal a federal judge’s decision granting class-action status to a Faulkner County couple’s lawsuit over an oil spill in Mayflower should be denied, attorneys for the couple contended. In a federal-appeals court filing earlier this week, the attorneys disputed Exxon Mobil’s argument that a class-action case was a way to force the oil company to settle. “Exxon is the richest company in the world, literally, and it is preposterous to propose that the certification of this class may compel it to settle,” the attorneys wrote.
