Tapering starts, back from wall of doom

Doom came and went Saturday.

Maybe not for you. Maybe you faced challenges no more daunting than reorganizing your linen closet. But for the hundreds of Arkansas walkers and runners who've invested the past six (count 'em) months dutifully doing what the Little Rock Marathon's coaches say they needed to do so the 26.2-mile race doesn't clobber them March 2, Doom dawned before dawn did.

Doom came down upon all these hundreds of people in the form of a 20-mile workout, starting before sunrise.

"The 20-miler is the big bug-a-boo in most marathoners' minds," says training coach Hobbit Singleton.
