Old Greenville bridge offered for relocation

— Mississippi officials are soliciting proposals to remove and preserve the old U.S. Highway 82 bridge over the Mississippi River at Greenville.

The Continuous Steel Through Truss Bridge was opened in 1940 and has been determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places by the Mississippi Department of Archives and History.

Mississippi Department of Transportation officials say the new bridge crossing the river is nearing completion and the old bridge must be removed.

The deadline for submitting proposals is Aug. 14.

Proposals will be reviewed by MDOT, the MDAH, the Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department, the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program and the Federal Highway Administration.

The proposals must include a plan for how the steel truss will be removed and a timetable for getting work done.
