— Andreas Oeste, an oboist from Conway, received the $500 "Phillip Gullic Award"as grand prize at the University of Central Arkansas/ Conway Symphony Orchestra High School Concerto Competition on May16. He also won the Woodwind Division and a prize of $350.

Oeste, a son of Wolfgang and Patty Oeste of Conway, studies with Lorraine Duso, assistant professor of oboe at UCA and principal oboe with the CSO.

Eleven high school students from Conway, Van Buren, Stuttgart, Dardanelle, North Little Rock, Little Rock, Brinkley and Fort Smith participated in the competition. Judges scored the competitors without knowing their identities. The "Phillip Gullic Award" was donated by Kim and Phillip Gullic of Conway.

Now in its 24th season, the Conway Symphony Orchestra exists to create meaningful experiences through performances and education. Originally a joint project of the music departments at Hendrix College and University of Central Arkansas, the CSO roster is composed of both professional and pre-professional musicians.
