54-WEST Greenwood hangs on, fights off Alma

— A pair of heavyweight fighters kept getting up from the mat all night Friday, but Greenwood finally delivered the knockout blow against Alma.

Drew Hasley’s interception at the Greenwood 11 with two minutes remaining sealed the Bulldogs’ 25-21 victory at Airedale Stadium, clinching the second consecutive 5AWest Conference title for the first time in school history.

Greenwood (9-1, 7-0) will have home-field advantage throughout the Class 5A playoffs, beginning next Friday against Sylvan Hills. Alma (5-4-1, 5-2) is the No. 3 seed from the 5A-West and opens at White Hall.

Alma took every punch thrown at it for most of the night, even recovering from the loss of starting quarterback Burke Broadfoot to take a 21-19 lead into the fourth quarter.

Greenwood drove 55 yards to score the eventual winning points. Quarterback Tyler Shook threw an 18-yard touchdown to sophomore Blake Hasley, Drew Hasley’s brother. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Bulldogs with a 25-21 lead.

Alma started at its 10 with 5:31 remaining. Austin McCourt, who replaced the injured Broadfoot in the second half, hit Mikai Williams for 15 yards on fourth-and-10. Two plays later, McCourt scrambled for 12 yards to the Greenwood 33. His next pass was intercepted by Drew Hasley.
