State asks judge to dismiss Weiner consolidation suit

State officials are asking a federal judge to dismiss a lawsuit by supporters of a small Arkansas school district challenging its consolidation with a neighboring district.

The attorney general’s office on Friday responded to a lawsuit challenging the state’s law mandating the closure of school districts whose enrollments drop below 350 students for two years in a row.

The state ordered the closure of the Weiner School District, which was merged with the nearby Harrisburg School District on July 1.

The state said in its filing that reversing the consolidation would disrupt education in the district and may deprive students in Weiner of an adequate level of funding for their education.

The lawsuit was filed by Friends of the Weiner School District.
