Bomb-case sentencing for doctor now Feb. 28

— U.S. District Judge Brian S. Miller agreed Wednesday to postpone until February the sentencing of Dr. Randeep Mann, convicted in August of orchestrating a bombing that injured the chairman of the Arkansas State Medical Board.

On Wednesday, Mann’s lead attorney, Blake Hendrix, requested a postponement from the original sentencing date of Dec. 10, saying he needed time to respond to a presentence report that recommends a life sentence and $1.7 million in restitution, and that he also had a scheduling conflict. Prosecutors didn’t object.

Miller set the sentencing for 1 p.m. Feb. 28.

Mann’s wife, Sangeeta “Sue” Mann, who was convicted of obstructing an investigation into the bombing, remains scheduled for sentencing on Dec. 8.

Mann operated a clinic in Russellville until his arrest in 2009 after a bomb exploded outside the home of Dr. Trent Pierce, who continues to head the medical board. The board had disciplined Mann in the past and was beginning a new investigation that threatenedto strip him of his medical license.

Pierce was blinded in one eye by the explosion that occurred when he moved a grenade-rigged spare tire that had been propped against the bumper of his sport utility vehicle during the night.
