Civil trial to begin for convicted evangelist

— A civil trial is set to begin Tuesday in Texarkana for convicted evangelist Tony Alamo.

Alamo is up against two of his former ministry members who say he ordered another man to beat them on his compound in southwest Arkansas.

In a lawsuit filed on their behalf in 2008, the two young men are seeking damages against Alamo.

They were each awarded $1.5 million from the man who allegedly carried out the beatings after he failed to respond to their lawsuit.

Alamo is serving a 175-year prison term for taking young girls across state lines for sex. He won't likely be in court on Tuesday because it would cost too much to transport him from federal prison in Terre Haute, Ind.
