R.E.M. breaks up after 30 years

by Arkansas Online | September 21, 2011 at 1:26 p.m.

R.E.M. is calling it quits after 30 years.

The Athens, Ga., rock band is known for such catchy tunes as "Man on the Moon" and "What's the Frequency, Kenneth" but also more somber tracks "Everybody Hurts" and "Losing My Religion."

The band posted this statement on its website: “To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band. We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.”
