FAYETTEVILLE — Michael Kane Whitehurst, a wide receiver on Arkansas' football team, was arrested on Sunday and charged with possession of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Whitehurst was arrested by the University of Arkansas Police Department and booked into the Washington County Detention Center at 6:48 a.m. He was later released on a $1,320 bond.
According to the arrest report, Whitehurst was arrested at 3:39 a.m. on Sunday by an officer responding to a complaint of a black BMW squealing its tires in the Garland Avenue Parking Deck on the UA campus. The officer clocked the car going 25 miles per hour in the facility, which has a speed limit of 10 miles per hour.
The arresting officer reported smelling burnt marijuana coming from the car upon the traffic stop, and found a "grinder, pipe and small baggie of marijuana" inside the vehicle.
Whitehurst has a hearing set for Monday and a court date set for April 30.
The 19-year-old Alpharetta, Ga., native is the second Arkansas football player to be arrested in the last three weekends. Offensive lineman Jason Peacock was arrested on March 16 after admitting to felony theft of property.
Peacock purchased $35.01 worth of gasoline with a stolen debit card, according to an arrest report, and was suspended indefinitely from the football program. Peacock has a court date set for April 16.
