Police in New York state say a man who ambushed firefighters had served 17 years for manslaughter in the death of his grandmother.

Webster Police Chief Gerald Pickering says 62-year-old William Spengler was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot in the head.

Police say he set fire to a car and house to lure firefighters to his house on the shore of Lake Ontario early Monday.

When firefighters arrived, he opened fire, probably with a rifle. Two firefighters died at the scene and two others were hospitalized. A fifth first responder was injured.

Police don’t know a motive yet.

A western New York police chief said Monday that a gunman who entrapped and shot four volunteer firefighters outside a blazing home is dead.

Pickering said two of the firefighters were killed and two others hospitalized after the ambush on a spit of land on Lake Ontario just northeast of Rochester.

He also said the gunman is dead and an off-duty police officer who was driving by has injuries from shrapnel. One of the slain firefighters is also a town police lieutenant.

The shooting Monday morning happened in a quiet neighborhood of seasonal and year-round homes.

Police say four homes in all were destroyed and four damaged by the spreading flames.

Domestic terrorism. Unfriendly adversaries will use this type of domestic terrorism to sway public opinion and legislation to disarm law abiding Americans who would otherwise be an obstacle to foreign aggression.

I do not see Great Britain seeing foreign aggression because they have gun control laws, that by the way ,are not even being consider in the US. Just ban assault type weapons and LCM. I mean Bushmaster rifles with 100 round drum magazines and Tec 9 pistols with 33 round magazines or clips.

Domestic terrorism? Somebody didn't want the fire put out and was willing to kill for it. Just your typical murderous criminals. Hang every last one of them connected to it.

And YOU are evidently stupid enough to think that limiting guns in general would not affect his being able to obtain an illegal weapon...Scarcity limits availability...!!!

I really can't believe some of the stuff I'm reading here!! He was a convicted felon, convicted of killing his GRANDMOTHER!(ok, pleaded down to manslaughter). These are the kind of nuts that no amount of gun laws will stop. He was already breaking the law by Having a firearm and that didn't make a bit of diferenceto him! You folks need to get a little comon sense and quit listening to all the so called pundits who have all the answers that don't make a lick of sense!
