Alexander police officer shoots man

— The Arkansas State Police are investigating the shooting of a man Saturday afternoon by an Alexander police officer.

A female officer patrolling in the area of Lindsey Drive and Brookwood Road about 4:30 p.m. Saturday spotted a man on foot about 400 feet west of the intersection, Alexander Police Chief Horace Walters said.

Walters said the exact details are under investigation, but at some point, the officer shot the man, who was armed with some type of weapon.

The man, whose name was not released by police, was taken to Saline Memorial Hospital in Benton, where information about his condition was not available Saturday night.

Walters said he asked the state police to investigate the shooting, which is the first involving an Alexander officer since he joined that Police Department in June 2010.

The officer - one of six in the department, including himself, Walters said - was put on administrative leave, pending an internal investigation.

The officer’s name was not released Saturday night.

Bill Sadler, a spokesman for the State Police, said the agency assigned a case agent shortly before 6 p.m. and that additional details about the shooting would not be released Saturday night.
