Moment of conception

Jesus, is that you? When does life begin? Scientifically, when the sperm enters the egg the transformation begins. Why is this so hard to understand?

When did Jesus become Jesus? When he took his first breath or when God conceived in Mary his only son? What if Mary had an abortion? Would God have said “don’t worry, it wasn’t a baby yet”?

I believe abortion is wrong no matter what laws man make. Please stop the killing of these unwanted babies.

Research its history

It is stunning the number of individuals who insist this is a Christian nation, and that only in a Christian nation can freedom and liberty flourish. They also apparently believe that only Christianity openly practices the virtues of love, tolerance, charity and justice.

If these claims were any more absurd, they would be ridiculous.

Would it be presumptuous of me to assume that these individuals are not actively engaged in the study of other nations and their people? Not to be repetitive, but one can hardly ignore their obvious lack of research on the history of Christianity. If they knew its history, I think they would not make premature claims about Christian tolerance.

Christians have a long history of intolerance toward other Christians and unbelievers alike. The Puritans, who had left Europe to escape religious persecution, wasted no time in proclaiming the Quakers to be a serious nuisance who were advised to clear out forthwith.

Despite Christians’ claim that this is a Christian nation, the fact is this is a free country with a secular government, and no amount of ridiculous conjecture can change that.

Nowhere in our Constitution does it mention God, Jesus or Peter, Paul and Mary. Why? Because those who signed the Constitution were fully aware of the history of intolerance among Christian factions and feared a theocracy would destroy this nation, so they chose a secular government with no hidden agenda or religious ax to grind.

Hold the phone (calls)

I cannot be the only person these people drive crazy.

Are you tired of getting those calls from people who want to lower your credit-card interest? I am.

It does no good to say you aren’t interested-they call with the absolute “last chance to apply today” many times. The other day I pushed their number and asked why they keep calling me since I am on the Do Not Call list. I was told, “We have authority from your credit-card company to call you.”

I called my credit-card company and the young lady said they don’t do that, then suggested it might be another company. She called them and they said, no, they do not authorize anything like that, that they are all scams, and not to give them any info.

Well, I don’t. All I want is for the calls to stop interfering with my life.

Has anyone out there had any luck? Help!

For truth, authority

I would like to compliment John Littlejohn on his support of the truth and authority of the Bible. If something is true, it does not matter what one believes about it and has no bearing on its validity one way or another.

I believe that what some of our atheistic friends believe and quote is from their own wishful thinking or from some source that has nothing to do with scripture, but is what someone says about the Bible.

I am amazed that such a large number of people in our country have no clue on what the Bible actually says on a lot of things, such as, for instance, homosexuality. There is a lot said about rights and fairness, etc., and some of our major churches have decided that gay marriage is OK, so I guess therefore it must be OK for those considered as Christian to ignore what the Bible says about it.

My Bible says the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God, and goes on to say that neither will thieves, the greedy, sexually immoral, etc., then plainly says “men who practice homosexuality.” As some renowned sports figure once said, “you can look it up.”

The Bible says that being unrepented of sin will send you to hell; what you believe about it has no bearing on it one way or another.

Academics more vital

Re athletic fees costing state students millions: This is not fair, right or justified. They have a hard time just getting an education with the funds they have.

Athletics are not as important as getting an education. Making college students pay so much per hour of credit just to fund athletics is wrong. BOBBY DIXON Pottsville

And they even read!

There was a morning discussion the other day with our family regarding college athletic fees. Our daughter, who is staying with us until her transition from the Army to being an English teacher is complete, chirps up: “It seems fair; I hear sometimes football players go to the library.” CANDI CABANISS Monticello

If there is abuse, call

Re the letter writer in Springdale who wrote about a neighbor abusing a dog: The writer should call the police. Keep calling until someone does something. Don’t wait for someone else because most people don’t care.

Some people don’t need kids or animals because they don’t take care of them. Arkansas’ animal cruelty law code says it’s an offense to knowingly abuse a dog, cat or horse. To starve, cause bodily harm or provide no shelter is aggravated animal abuse.

Don’t be afraid to turn someone in, because abusers are cowards. They only harm something that can’t fight back.

We are supposed to take care of all animals. How can anyone see abuse and not report it?
