Police: Boy shot while playing with stolen gun

Little Rock police have released more information about a child who was critically injured Wednesday afternoon in southwest Little Rock in what appears to be an accidental shooting.

Three boys — ages 8, 13, and 16 — were at 7518 Twin Oaks Road, the home of one of the boys' grandmother, when the youngest began to play with a Glock 9mm pistol, according to a police report. The 13-year-old said he tried to take the gun away from his 8-year-old cousin, but it accidentally fired and struck the child, the report states.

Police were then called about 4:47 p.m. to a neighbor's home, where they found the victim on the front porch suffering from a gunshot wound on the top of his head, bottom of his chin and left arm, according to the report.

The child was rushed to surgery and was last listed in guarded condition, police said in a statement Thursday.

No adults were in the home at the time of the shooting, authorities said.

It was later determined that the pistol belonged to the 13-year-old's uncle and had been reported stolen out of Little Rock in August 2010, Little Rock Police Department spokesman Sgt. Cassandra Davis said. She added that no one has been charged yet over possession of the gun.

At the time the police report was filed at 8:46 p.m., police were still unable to reach the victim's mother, identified as Zakiyyah Martindale. Davis said it was unclear whether Martindale had been contacted as of late Thursday morning.

The report has been filed with the county prosecutor for review of any potential charges, police said.
